HOUTSKAR ISLAND

Swedish-speaking Houtskar is the only county in Finland's South-West district of Turunmaa to speak Swedish as its sole language. Houtskar offers shimmering sandy beaches, craggy islets, a beautiful national park and the mysterious island of Jungfruskär.

In Houtskar you can enjoy a peaceful cultural life as well as a great variety of nature. On the island there are art galleries and an almost 300-year old wooden church, among other things.

SERVICES ON THE ISLAND

In the village of Näsby (500m from the retreat centre) there are two mini-markets, a tourist information, a bank, a library, handicraft shops, a market, a bar, an ice-cream kiosk and a small harbour area with a café. County health service centre is located right beside the retreat centre.

In the direction of Korppoo ferry one can find restaurant Emma. On the nearby cliff stands a spectacular stone sanctuary from the bronze era.

HOUTSKAR FOLK HIGHSCHOOL

The retreat is hosted by Houtskar Folk Highschool retreat centre, located 7 km from Korppoo ferry and within a walking distance (500m) from the village of Näsby. The retreat centre comprises of five accommodation buildings and one common building with a canteen.

The centre is near the tip of a peninsula and has thus a beautiful view towards the sea on both sides. On the northern side there is a sauna, a dock and a cliff from where you can observe the boats travelling to and from Houtskar harbour.

On the southern side you can take sun baths on the lawn or on the dock and enjoy the beauty and tranquil athmosphere of the bay. On the tip of the peninsula there is a sandy public beach on one side, and a popular jumping platform on the other side.
